Scurvy Grass (Cochlearia Officinalis) is an old crop plant that, until the last century, could still be found in many gardens. Its specialties are an enormously high Vitamin C content and the possibility of harvesting it in winter. The Vikings are said to have already taken it on board with them against scurvy. That's why this salad plant is also known as scurvy grass. Other names are common scurvygrass, buttercup and watercress. Congenial to the application, Cochlearia Officinalis is originally home on the salt marshes of the Atlantic coast on the Northern hemisphere and grows wildly in salty, moist locations. Basically, it doesn't make special demands regarding the soil and grows everywhere. The spoon-shaped leaves, which have a hot, cress-like taste and enrich every fresh salad, are harvested. Apart from the heyday in May and June, the harvest of the leaves is possible all around the year. As a medicinal plant, scurvy grass is said to help with spring fever and fatigue after hard physical labour.
